"Logan" team developing spinoff script focusing on "X-23" standalone film

Following the success of "Logan" and its breakout young star Dafne Keen, it's no surprise that FOX wants to launch a new franchise around her character Laura/X-23.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, director James Mangold, producer Hutch Parker and star "Logan" star Hugh Jackman explored developing Laura’s story in a new film.

“Patty [Jenkins’] success with [Wonder Woman] only solidifies more for studios that there’s less to fear with a female protagonist,” said Mangold. “The more that keeps getting hit home, that ends up giving me more space turning around and going, ‘Well here we are with a female protagonist. That’s incredible. And what are we going to do with her?’ And that’s where we are with that [the Laura script] right now, dreaming.”

The team is still working through the developmental process, admitting they're not even sure which genre the new project would fall into. With the backing of FOX, that uncertainty may make for something audiences haven't gotten a chance to see as of yet.

“Yes, there are other facets of that character and some others potentially to explore in their own way,” said Parker. “It may not be in the same exact tonality or with the same genre orientations as Logan, but I think part of what has been opened up in this universe to all of us now is, drawing on different genre traditions, there are new pathways to be opened for new characters that populate this universe.”

With "X-Men: Dark Phoenix" wrapping up production, the upcoming "New Mutants" and a pair of shows currently running on FOX networks, there's certainly a lot going on in the "X-Men" universe.
