The Highlight: AJ Lee talks CM Punk's fight purse, plans for UFC return and more
We haven't heard much from former WWE superstar CM Punk since he made his MMA debut back at UFC 203 in 2016.
Luckily for us, his wife, fellow former WWE superstar AJ Lee, has a book to promote.
Chatting with Jim Norton and Sam Roberts, Lee gave some insight into Punk's rough first outing. Then 37, the pro wrestler didn't make it out of the first round, tapping out via rear-naked choke to 24-year-old prospect Mickey Gall.
Asked about the shift from scripted to unscripted combat, Lee admitted it was strange knowing someone out there was preparing to beat up her spouse.
"That was definitely just the weirdest thing," said Lee. "Just the months leading up, knowing that there's this person out there in the world and their only thought is hurting your husband. *That* is what their gameplan is for months. That's their job and I respect the sport so much. I think they do a great job. It's just so weird."
Punk didn't fare well in the Octagon but he certainly made the most of his time.
"I don't think it hurt that for one night of work you get paid $1 million," said Lee. "He was pretty psyched about that. He came backstage and had the biggest smile on his face. He was incredibly sweaty and I just threw myself on him and said, 'I'm just so fricking proud of you.' His [post-fight] speech was just so moving and I try not to get emotional in front of people so we just went over to our own little corner. 'That was so f**king cool. I'm so proud of you.'"
So is Punk up for another bout? Lee says that's the plan.
"Yes!" Lee said emphatically. "He wants to fight again. I'm never going to be the person who stops someone from doing whatever their dream is so I support it. I just look at his face right now and I'm like, 'OK. Stay that way. Stay that way. Stay that way.'"
