The Highlight: Jimmy Garoppolo and 49ers hope he's the QB of the future, 'We studied him hard'
We won't have to wait long to see Jimmy Garoppolo behind center for the San Francisco 49ers.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch both confirmed Garoppolo won't likely play this Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals, but a week 10 home game against the struggling New York Giants would fit the bill.
"I guess we'll see what happens, type of thing," Garoppolo told media Tuesday during his introductory presser. "You know, I'm thrilled to be here. I mean, I just got here this morning. I couldn't be happier. But you know, we're just ... got to take it week-by-week right now. I've got a whole playbook to learn. The terminology, I mean, it's going to be like learning a different language. I'm looking forward to the challenge and enjoying the process."
Garoppolo was acquired from the New England Patriots for a second-round pick prior to the NFL trade deadline. After spending years behind future Hall of Famer Tom Brady, the sought after backup is eager to see some meaningful playing time.
"I'm eager to get out there and show what I can do on Sundays," Garoppolo said. "This league, it's tough, it really is, so when you get your opportunities, you have to take advantage of them because you don't know when you're going to get another."
Speaking with 49ers media prior to the presser, Lynch explained that the organization had been eying Garoppolo for quite a while. The fourth-year pro becomes a free agent at the end of the year so Lynch and Co. will need to act fast.
"He hasn't played a lot but he has played a number of pre-season games. When he has played in regular season games it's never looked too big. We studied him hard. We studied him hard this offseason. We tried to do a deal this offseason. It didn't come to fruition. It presented itself now and we felt like it was an opportunity we had to jump at. We're very excited."
