The Spotlight: Gary Oldman embraces DCEU chaos, wants to see Joaquin Phoenix play Batman
Batman is in crisis.
Warner Bros.' DC Extended Universe is currently being overhauled with new leadership, Ben Affleck can't wait to move on from the role and director Matt Reeves is still "outlining" what's next for the Dark Knight.
Reeves is reportedly kicking the tires on Jake Gyllenhaal and Jon Hamm as possible replacements should Affleck officially bail, but former Commissioner Gordon himself Gary Oldman has someone else in mind.
"I would like to see someone like Joaquin Phoenix play it," Oldman told TooFab.com. "This is no disrespect to Ben Affleck. I think it really depends on who is at the wheel that lifts it."
We can dream, but it's tough to imagine a wildman like Phoenix committing to something like Batman. This is a man who spent years trying to convince us, in the form of a bizarre, NSFW quasi-mockumentary, that he was retiring from acting to pursue a career in hip-hop. Despite his penchant for indies and overall weirdness, Phoenix actually came pretty close to signing on as Marvel's Doctor Strange in 2015 before abruptly backing out.
"I’ve flirted with several of those films, having meetings and getting close, but ultimately it never felt like they’d really be fulfilling," Phoenix told Time Out New York in 2015. "There were too many requirements that went against my instincts for character. I’ve been spoiled. I’ve never had to make those compromises. I’ve not met a director yet with one of those films where we go through the script, they say: “You know what, fuck this set-piece, let’s focus on the character!” I understand, but it’s best I don’t do it.’"
We'll just keep dreaming.
