Three Weeks In - MLB: Power Rankings, Matchups, Highlights and more

We’ve got bench-clearing brawls, diving web-gems and some truly outstanding pitching. Week three is in the books and the standings are starting to take shape. The New York Mets are surprisingly dominant with no sign of slowing, the Los Angeles Dodgers can’t seem to get it into gear, and the Boston Red Sox stay on the top of baseball with some newly-found run support to balance out their shutdown rotation. Lots to talk about, let’s dive in.

What To Watch

I’m trying my best not to appear biased with this What To Watch section, but I have to go with the hot hand here. The Red Sox and Yankees delivered on a bench clearing brawl and the #1 vs. #3 team (both in our power rankings and win percentage) certainly deserve a little spotlight. So this week, we’re urging you to watch the Boston Red Sox at the Los Angeles Angels.

Aside from a head-to-head battle for 1st place in the American league – reason enough to watch the series – we’ve got one of the most intriguing pitching matchups of the year so far. In the very first game of the series, Boston’s David Price takes on the red hot Shohei Ohtani in what should be an epic duel.

Of course, there are questions afoot. Price’s last appearance featured a 4-0 shellacking at the hands of the Yanks. With complaints of a strange numbness in his throwing-hand fingers, he failed to return for a second inning and hasn’t pitched since.

There was some talk of him missing a start, but he only flip-flopped with Brian Johnson in the end. Whether it was the cold or something more serious, DP is ready to give it a go. Unfortunately for him, it won’t be an easy outing.

Shohei Ohtani has been the biggest story through the first three weeks of baseball and with good reason. As a pitcher, he’s 2-0 with 18 strikeouts in 13 innings pitched. He’s got an ERA of just 2.08 with a 0.46 WHIP. He’s not good. He’s great.

But, of course, his pitching numbers are only half the story. He’s also an excellent batter, DH-ing when he’s not in the rotation. After 30 at-bats, he’s got a .367 average with 11 hits and 11 RBIs. Add in 3 home runs, a triple and a double for a slugging average of .767.

Red Sox and Angels kick off their three-game series tomorrow night at 10:07 ET. All three games are late, west coast starts.
