Six Weeks In - MLB: Power Rankings, Matchups, Highlights and more

We’ve got people punching themselves, a reintroduction to baseball’s greatest rivalry, and loads of career milestones. The weather’s getting warmer, the ballparks are filling out, and it’s finally starting to feel like summer. I’ll start by giving a shout out to Ken Giles for an all-time meltdown on May Day. It didn’t quite fit into the “Top Plays” category, but it’s definitely worth mentioning. Hell, it may be worth changing the name of the section as to not limit ourselves in the future. You just don’t see a dude punching himself in the face every day. You think that guy wants to win? I’d be proud to have him on my team. I love a little crazy in my closers. It’s been another hectic week, with no signs of slowing, so let’s get right into it.

What To Watch:

I mean this goes without saying, right? The two best teams in baseball are the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees. They’re also one of the most storied and bitter rivalries in all of sports. The last time they played, we saw a bench clearing brawl. The Sox won the first series and this one is in New York. There’s just a lot of storylines going into this one and I couldn’t be more excited to see them play out.

Let’s instead focus on the hard stats. The Yanks have won 15 of their last 16 games, falling 2-1 to the Astros on April 30th; their one blemish of late. Still, they outscored the Astros 15-7 in the series and swept the Minnesota Twins, Los Angeles Angels and Cleveland Indians along the way. The run of success has led them to a 24-10 record, one of only two teams in the MLB with a win percentage over 70%.

The other team is, of course, the first place Red Sox. Coming off the hottest April in franchise history, the Red Sox dropped one to the floundering Kansas City Royals. They won the third game and split the series, but were immediately blown out by the Texas Rangers, 11-5. Boston again bounced back with a three-game win streak, putting both teams in prime position to take first place in the AL East. If they split 2-1 Boston, it’ll be all knotted up. Anything else crowns a leader. But make no mistake; this’ll be a fight until October. Both of these teams are plotting a deep post-season run.

The series kicks off Tuesday with Drew Pomeranz vs. Luis Severino. David Price and Masahiro Tanaka square off Wednesday, and Rick Porcello and CC Sabathia bring us home. All games start at 7:05 in the Bronx. Mark your calendars.
